November 11 - December 1 Listening/Instrumental Assignment (remember that listening assignments apply to the weeks during which the listening is assigned.)

Double Bass (or just "bass")

Listening:
Please listen to all the examples on the page of the link. Also listen to this YouTube:

Carnival of the Animals "Elephants": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWUt2D0FkdU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYvYedsBA50 (watch the piece between 8:00 and 10:00 minutes)

Question: How does a performer play the double bass (stand/sit)? Why do you think the bass was used to represent "Elephants"? Did you learn anything new about the double bass?

  1. Kimball & Josie: both stand and sometimes sit on a tall stool. ("at the symphony a base was sitting on a large stool" k )

"because they are big and deep" j
"when there is only room enough for one in the mud puddle they fight over it" k ;)
